One of the most coveted positions in the make up of a band, the guitarist is often one of the most important elements, perhaps not quite on the surface but when looking at what could be a fairly drab canvas, they can be that much needed injection of emotion and colour. Some of the most influential personalities in the Metal world have been guitarists from the likes of Queen’s Brian May and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, Dimebag Darrel of Pantera to the more virtuoso of musicians the likes of Devin Townsend, Steve Vai and John Petrucci.
Able to express their musical opinion with more dexterity than perhaps anybody else, the list is endless for just how many influential guitarists have come and gone. Understanding that these musicians won’t be here forever, I’ve begun to think to myself, who would be at the vanguard of the new wave of Modern Metal guitar virtuoso? With answers ranging from Technical Death Metal, Progressive Metal, Thrash Metal and everything in between, these are just ten of the potential suitors to the position.
Taking into account everything from songwriting, ability, phrasing, note choice and personality, featuring members from The Faceless, Ne Obliviscaris and Sylosis, without further ado here are ten of my personal top modern guitarists. What do you guys think, who have I missed out? Tell me in the comments section and don’t forget to subscribe!
