One 2017’s biggest surprises was the announcement of a brand new Glassjaw record. After fifteen years umming and ahh-ing the band released their first new material last Friday on December 1st. Having had a bit of time to soak in, I thought that I would weigh up my thoughts.
Totally missing the Glassjaw train owing to the fact that I was just a little bit too young at the time, I’ve been given a second lease of life with the reveal that Glassjaw released their first studio material in years via Material Control. Consisting of twelve tracks, Material Control is an exercise not only in heaviness but in dynamics. Understanding each section perfectly, the precise battering ram that is Justin Beck’s bass guitar hits hard, whilst Daryl Palumbo’s vocals hit the sweet spot pushing home the band’s message.
Now that the record has been out for a little while and I’ve had enough time to take in exactly what Glassjaw were trying to do, I’ve weighed in my opinion and spoiler alert : its fantastic.
